Promiscuous Mode

I was seeking clarification as I have seen it explained both ways.  When enabling promiscuous mode on a port group only and not on the entire vSwitch (standard or distributed) that the network adapter attached to that port group will only be able to see the traffic on that port group.

For instance if I have a 10 VLAN's one of them vlan 200 and I enable Promiscuous mode only on VLAN 200 portgroup  and attach a vNIC to that then I will only be able to see the traffic for VLAN 200.  Where as if I enabled Promiscuous mode on a Port group with a setting of 4095 then the vNIC attached to that could sniff all traffic on the entire vSwitch.  Just want that clarified to make sure my thinking is right.
